Johnny Evers Signed 1921 Chicago Cubs Payroll Check PSA DNA RARE

Chicago Cubs business check dated February 23, 1921, and issued to and endorsed by Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the check and certified the signature as “Authentic.” The check, drawn on the Lake View State Bank of Chicago, Illinois, is made out in the amount of $250.00. Signed by team president William L. Veeck (father of Hall of Fame owner Bill Veeck) in the lower-right corner. Endorsed by “John J. Evers” in black fountain pen on the reverse. Evers had been out of baseball since 1918 before returning to the Cubs in 1921 as manager. He failed to last the season and was replaced after 98 games by Bill Killefer. That season marked Evers’ final official association with the Cubs. He is best known today as the second baseman in baseball’s most famous double-play combo “Tinker to Evers to Chance.” Fittingly, all three players were elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. Evers died less than one year later, resulting in the scarcity of his signature today.
